A couple of houses form the station; the ranger support themselves from a garden and animals like goats. Basic foodstuff is bought on stock. Another source for daily needs represents the nature (hunting and collecting). The protected area of Baikalo-Lensky Natur Reserve makes up 659,000 ha and forms the largest part of the nature preserve in the Lake Baikal region. It was founded in 1986 to maintain the intact nature at the western shore in the Baikals’ki-Mountains. The Lake Lena originates in this region giving the reserve its name. A peculiarity is that butterflys come to this place after laying their eggs in order to die at the beach. Bears appreciate this additional protein source and visit the beach likewise. It is a great chance to observe bears.
