The GOCAD-well-converter is a software which converts well-data from an MS-ACCESS database into a GOCAD.wl - file. This software provides a fast and easy gateway to put your well data into the 3D-modelling-software GOCAD.

DATABASE

The program converts well-data from a database with a defined structure. This structure is delivered as SampleDB.mdb. It contains 2 tables, one for the basic data such as name, geographical coordinates, depths etc.. and second for the strata. The 2 tables are linked with a 1 ® ¥ link using the datafield-name "Shortname". That means one dataset in the table BasicData (one well) is linked to several datasets in the table StrataData (several strata).
 

You have to enter your well-datas into this database, since this program reads only this database-structure. GOCAD needs the following information, to draw wells and well markers (compare with the file SampleDB.mdb):

Shortname	BasicData
Easting	BasicData
Northing	BasicData
Height (sea level)	BasicData
Depth (sea level)	BasicData
Depth [of marker] (below groundlevel)	StrataData
Wellmarker [name of wellmarker]	StrataData

You may enlarge the database to your needs and change its name but don’t change the above listed datafield-names.

In most cases the table StrataData contains all lithological units of the well. But it makes no sense to assign a well marker to every strata of the well. Usually you have to combine several strata to one unit representing stratigraphical units, geophysical data etc. Be sure to know what you want to model with GOCAD before using this converter.

The program reads all necessary information from the database and creates the well marker. Therefore all neighboring strata with the same well marker will be combined, the well marker will be set to the bottom of the unit. After that a ".wl" -file will be written.
 

GOCAD-well-converter MULTIPLE

This software works like the above explained but it converts all wells of your database at once.
 

• Advantage: fast processing of large amounts of data
• Disadvantage: errors in the database will be ignored, these data will not be converted but listed in an error-file.

Installation

The self extracting file WELLCON.EXE contains the following files:

• setup-files for mdb2wl.exe
• mdb2wl_M.exe
• SampleDB.mdb

Unzip the file WellConv.exe by double clicking. Run setup to install mdb2wl.exe. The setup puts several visual BASIC dll’s on your hard drive. mdb2wl_m.exe needs not to be installed separately.
