Palaeontology in Freiberg
Palaeontology in Freiberg - that is not
only an extraordinarily interesting and exciting topic for students, scientists,
and interested teachers, scholars and other people (look also the chapters "education"
and "scientific work"), but it differs in its character from many
other universities in Germany. Firstly, we do understand palaeontology as an
applied science, which is very useful in the professional daily work of geologists
of different specialization. Biologically or ecologically, hydrologically or
stratigraphically, with a mining or a technical orientation - palaeontology
contributes to the insight and to the synthesis of geological data and processes.
Palaeontology is one of the urgently required tools for the successfully working
and outlooking geologist - thats the special kind of Palaeontology
in Freiberg.
At Freiberg University students are educated interdisciplinarily and early involved in the scientific work. The inner coherence of palaeontology to other fields as sedimentology, regional geology, palaeogeography, climatology, or biology, and geochemistry are characteristically as well for our lessons as for our scientific work. In this concern we appreciate a big knowledge and the ability of autonomous working of our students as well in Germany and in central Europe as in the different regions of the world - maybe in the hot Morocco, in the arid Jordan desert, in the beautiful southern France, or on the island of Sardinia. During the theoretical education and numerous practical trainings and excursions (realized partly immediately in the backyard, partly around the half of the world) a lot of capabilities and knowledge are imparted, allowing the students to work in all these regions for firms, establishments, institutions, or for the own diploma or Phd studies independently.
Palaeontology is the science of the past
life - but itself is strongly alive!
