Diving is a popular kind of sport, which can be learned relatively
fast. Performing research under water, however, requires talents, in particular
a perfect balance and additional skills. Geoscientists, bioscientists, and archaeologists
sometimes deal with objects, which are under water and so that require research
under water. If the objects lie in large water depths, we need special submarines
and equipment.
If the objects lie in the range few tens of meter, then they are accessible
by divers and can thus be economically reached. Examples of scientific diving
projects are archaeological sites (example: Alexandria),
which are today below water level, because the water level rose and/or the land
dropped. Within the field of Hydrogeology karstic aquifers and sub marine discharge
of groundwater in karst areas offer highly interesting projects. Hydrothermal
features (fumaroles, hot water springs etc.) offer a wide spectra of scientific
questions and spectacular sceneries. The investigation of ship wrecks is a further
research field, which can be seen under archaeological, technical, ecological
(wrecks as artificial
reefs) or insurance terms (research on accidents). Further research fields
are an indeterminable abundance of biological and ecological questions (e.g.
growth of reefs, ecological consequences of sewage inlets, behavior of animal
and plant communities etc.). For the first time in 2003 the course ended with a two weeks diving camp. Who may take part in this course? Any student of the TUBAF, but in particular students from Geology, Geoecology, and Archaeometry. However the course is as well open to students from other universities. You must owe a valid diving license (open water diver or equivalent) Scientific diving 2006 in Sicily. Students from other universities are welcome. More information here....
