Aims of GOAL

GOAL is a Geo-Network of Latinamerican geoscientist and geoengineers who carried out part of their professional education in Germany. GOAL was founded during an initial meeting in July 2002 in Lima (GREMIO, see activities). From the German side, several universities (see Consortium) are involved in the network activities.

The network name and this home page is in English because, apart from GOAL-members, we want to inform other people and institutions about our network. Also it is helpful for people from “non-castellano” Latinamerican countries like Brasil.

Immediate targets:

-         Building up of a alumni database (see List of Alumni and Registration)

-         Contact further Alumni

-         Appointment of Coordinators for every Latinamerican country (see contact)

-         Planning activities in the current phase of GOAL built up

Medium-term targets

-         Establishment of a sustaining and active network of Latinamerican and German geoscientist and geoengineers

Long-term targets:

-         Improvement of the Latinamerican German geoscientific and geotechnic cooperation

-         Improvement of the geoscientific and geotechnic education in Latinamerica

Activities:

GREMIO Meeting, July 5th-7th, 2002 in Lima:

The GREMIO-Meeting under the topic “Georecursos y medio ambiente” took place in facilities of the Sección de Ingenería de Minas, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru in Lima. GREMIO, which was attended by over 30 Latinamerican Alumni and 7 German participants, was the “bump start” of the new network GOAL. It was made possible by the efforts of many GOAL members (again: thanks to Silvia!!) and by funds of the German DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). Much support came from represantatives of the Sección de Ingenería de Minas der Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru.

Happy GREMIO participants

The two-and a half-day program included 7 talks about applied and basic aspects of environment, mineral deposits, road construction, basic geology, the DAAD Alumni program, and much time was allocated for discussions about the Network.

Future activities:

1.

A GOAL meeting of the Latinamerican coordinators and the German consortium partners is planned at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg on the occasion of the 18th Conference on Latinamerican Geoscience (april 3rd-5th, 2002) (www.geo.tu-freiberg.de/dynamo/LAK.htm). The GOAL meeting is scheduled to april 1st to 2nd 2003. Precise schedule and place will be announced later.

2.

The next GOAL meeting in South America is envisioned April/May 2004 connected to the EXPOMIN in Santiago de Chile.
